In the decade of 1830, the senior colonel of the National Guard in Vassouras and Iguaçu, Laureano Corrêa e Castro, Baron of Campo Belo - title awarded by him in 1854 - constructed between mountains, beside a noisy river, the headquarters of the Fazenda do Secretario. The large house was one of the most beautiful places of the region of Vassouras in the century XIX, and is one of the best examples of the neoclassical style in historic farms. |
The entrance presents two high gates and the traditional sequence of windows in straight line, with decorated flags, frames and columns with small cavities. The door of the entrance, in wood, is distinguished of the set for the flag in full arc. It was registered for the posterity in the portraited of Victor Frond and in the description of the french Ribeyrolles. This last one visited the farm between 1859 and 1860 and, enchanted with the gardens of the property, compared them with the gardens constructed in the castles of France. Iron statues, manufactured in the French industry Barbezar & Co. Val D'Osne, decorates the garden. |
The Fazenda do Secretario had some constructions, houses of employees, infirmaries, warehouses and tulhas (the place where the harvest of coffee is stored). Today, beyond the tulha, it is possible to see part of one of these constructions, with its enormous french clock, that probably helped the Baron to follow the working hours of the slaves. The chapel - part of the main building - meets in reform. The internal walls of the farm are richly decorated with oil paintings with European themes, that has been attributed to the spanish painter Jose Maria Villaronga. |
The Baron of Campo Belo and his wife Mrs. Eufrásia Joaquina, had six children: Christóvão, Antonio, Lúcio, Maria da Conceição, Maria and Ana Esméria. The Baron dies in 1861; in March, 13 of 1873 dies the baroness. In the allotment of the properties, the son Dr. Christóvão Corrêa e Castro inherits the farm. With his death in March, 12 of 1891, his son Julio Corrêa e Castro, with only 18 years old, inherits the property; with 680 hectares and 467 thousand feet of coffee. In 1877, the property had already been mortgaged. The heirs didn't able to liquidate their debts, and lose the Fazenda do Secretario for the Banco do Brazil in 1908, when this goes the auction. |
